Alethea was established in 1927 and, in 1954, was registered with the Department of Examinations of Sri Lanka as a Secondary School. Our values are embodied in the School Motto "Live, Give, Grow" - to live within a multi-ethnic community, give of one's best and grow up to serve Mankind.
Education is entrusted to our versatile, committed and dedicated academic staff consisting of Postgraduate
Degree holders, Trained Graduates, Graduates and Trained Teachers. Experienced National Level Coaches train our students in a variety of sports and extra curricular activities, as well as other skill-building activities. We believe in our staff continually upgrading their knowledge and skills, and towards this end the Management supports and invests in providing these opportunities.
From 1968, the students of Alethea had sat for the General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examinations in Sri Lanka in the Sinhala, Tamil and English mediums. Regrettably, post 1983, the Tamil medium had to be discontinued due to lack of demand.
With the then Sri Lankan Government's directive to stop English medium education, the English medium students opted to do London Examinations instead, and in 1988 the International School was established and students sat for the General Certificate of Education (London) Examinations (Ordinary and Advanced Level).
In 1992, the local Advanced Level Commerce Stream was established and, in 1994, the first batch of students sat the examination. Our students have consistently performed well, with many students qualifying to enter university. Most, however, have preferred to join banks and other financial institutions, or pursue courses of study in Accountancy or Management. Though we are
proud of them all, we have special admiration for those who braved the challenges posed in the Universities of Sri Lanka, and pursued their studies there.
In 2002, the Department of Education reintroduced the English Medium. Schools registered with the Department were now permitted to submit their students to sit for their Advanced Level Examinations, and to be considered for entrance, in the regular admissions scheme, to local universities. This approval was first given for the Science stream only. Now any registered school, which has the teaching resources, can send their students for any Advanced Level Examination in the English medium.
In 2001, Alethea started the English Medium for the lower grades and today offers this facility for all grades. We are proud that many of our Sinhala Medium students too have opted to transfer to the English Medium and have been more than able to cope with the transition.
In keeping with the increasing demand for education in English, and with the desire to provide it at an affordable price, with the added advantage of qualifying for entrance to Sri Lankan universities, Alethea has ventured to reintroduce Advanced Level classes, initially in the Science and Arts streams. This has been after much deliberation, particularly taking into account the revised admissions procedures of the University Grants Commission, and the needs of the students in today's social and financial contexts.
The academic staff in the Advanced Level classes at Alethea are all qualified teachers, who have prematurely retired from Government Service. They are thorough in their knowledge of their respective subject matter, and
have an excellent command of the English Language. All of them have over 15 years of experience in preparing students for examinations in the English medium. They are all Graduates, some with Post-graduate qualifications in Education.
The London Advanced Level Examination will continue to be offered to students wishing to pursue their further education overseas, or to join foreign affiliated private universities in Sri Lanka. Students wishing to pursue professional careers in Management, Accounting or Information Technology Fashion Designing, Design Technology, and Special Education have the opportunity to do so at Alethea. We will be pleased to assist you in career guidance and subject choices.
